Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Saturday's series finale between the Greenville Drive and the Asheville Tourists required extra innings to decide, and the Tourists came away with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings in the rubber game of the series.
The Tourists (2-1, 29-43) took the lead in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Snyder to score Sean Bouchard, who began the inning placed on second base by Minor League Baseball rules.
In the bottom half, the Drive (1-2, 26-46) got their runner to third with one out, but a strikeout and a flyout secured the victory for Asheville.
Asheville scored in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Vilade, and after that, starters Jhonathan Diaz and Nick Kennedy locked horns in a pitcher's duel.
That was the only run allowed by Diaz, who worked six innings for the Drive and scattered six hits while striking out six and not issuing a walk. Kennedy held Greenville scoreless for six innings of his own, and he gave up just four hits with two strikeouts.
The Drive plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead. Victor Acosta led off the frame with a game-tying home run, his seventh of the year. After Greenville loaded the bases with nobody out, Isaias Lucena lined a two-run single to make the score 3-1.
The Tourists answered in the next half inning with two runs to tie the game, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Chad Spanberger and an RBI hit by Snyder.
Tommy Doyle (5-4) threw a scoreless ninth to get the win for Asheville, and Robert Tyler earned his fourth save. Devon Fisher (3-5) took the loss despite allowing just one unearned run in two innings.
Lucena went 3-3 to lead the Greenville offense, while Pedro Castellanos and Tanner Nishioka chipped in with two hits apiece.
The Drive will begin a six-game road trip on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 against the Rome Braves, an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Right-hander Denyi Reyes (5-3, 1.85) will take the mound against Rome left-hander Bruce Zimmermann (7-3, 2.67).
