HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- After falling behind 4-2 late in the game, Greensboro's Jhonny Santos smacked a 3-run home run in the final frame to give the Grasshoppers a win, 5-4 in seven innings, over the Hagerstown Suns in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium. Greensboro extended its winning streak to a season-best five games, dating back to the final series of the First Half.
Santos finished 1-for-3, driving in Thomas Jones and Jose Devers with his go-ahead blast to finish with three RBI.
Gabriel Castellanos (1-0) earned the win despite a blown save, working 2.0 innings and allowing a run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouots. Sam Held (2-3) took the loss for Hagerstown, giving up three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in 3.0 relief innings.
Greensboro (2-0 Second Half, 36-35) built an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings. Jones scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. Garvis Lara added an RBI-double to cash Isael Soto in the second.
Hagerstown broke the shutout when Armond Upshaw singled to score Alejando Flores for a run in the fifth. The Suns then pulled in front with three runs in the home half of the sixth. Hoppers starting pitcher Edward Cabrera walked two batters before Castellanos took over and plunked Jake Scudder to load the bases. Omar Meregildo grounded out to drive in the tying run, 2-2, and Flores later followed a 2-run triple to go ahead, 4-2.
The Hoppers and Suns conclude this 3-game series with Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader at Municipal Stadium before returning to First National Bank Field to begin a 6-game home stand starting on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale for all games at gsohoppers.com.
