Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers moved back into a first-place tie with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, pounding the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 10-2, in the series-opener on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
Tulsa starting pitcher Keith Weiser had a super night, pitching seven strong innings and delivering a pair of hits, two runs scored and an RBI at the plate.
The Drillers built a huge lead for Weiser, thanks in part to Darin Holcomb, who had a three-run homer and an RBI double. Holcomb's three-run blast capped a four-run second, as the Drillers took the lead for good over Springfield starter Ryan Kulik.
Kulik (6-10) struggled in his first start since rejoining the Springfield rotation. After giving up four in the second, he gave up another in the third and one more in the fifth, as Daniel Carte's solo homer made it 6-0.
The Drillers got two in the sixth over new Springfield reliever Blake King, taking an 8-0 advantage.
Andrew Brown provided Springfield with their only offensive highlight of the night, clubbing a two-run homer to right field off of Weiser in the bottom of the sixth inning, making it 8-2. The homer for Brown is his 11th of the year.
Tulsa capped the scoring with another in the seventh off of King and one more in the eighth off of Gary Daley. Infielder Mike Folli was called upon to pitch the ninth, working around a pair of walks for a scoreless inning.
Weiser (9-14) allowed two unearned runs on just two hits over seven innings, picking up the win.
The Redbirds (29-35, 67-67) are home again on Wednesday night, taking on Tulsa in the second game of the seven-game home stand. Texas League Pitcher of the Year Samuel Deduno (12-4) will go opposite Springfield left-hander Nick Additon (2-3). Game time on Wednesday is 7:10pm. Don't forget that Friday night is another AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Display.
Tickets are available for all seven remaining home games, by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
