Draw Sets up Must-Win Saturday

October 17, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release

(ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico) 36 total shots, 15 of which were on goal, and 60% possession were not enough to get the full 3 points for New Mexico United as they drew with the visiting Tacoma Defiance, 1:1, on Wednesday night. For comparison, the Defiance, had 4 total shots, 2 on goal. New Mexico's playoff hopes are now contingent on winning this Saturday, and either San Antonio or LA Galaxy 2 losing.

The Defiance were able to net the evening's first goal, when Azriel Gonzalez put on a fine display of footwork in the 7th minute, and pinged a shot off of the far post past United Goalkeeper Cody Mizell. Before the 8th minute expired, New Mexico answered, when Kevaughn Frater cut a ball into the heart of the box that Chris Wehan poked home.

The remainder of the match was utterly dominated by New Mexico in terms of possession and chances created, but Defiance Goalkeeper Trey Muse shouldered his team and came up with 13 incredible saves to keep the score level. For the record, New Mexico's 36 shots is the league record for 2019.

United now go into Saturday's season finale against Las Vegas Lights FC knowing that they absolutely must win. Anything less than 3 points means no postseason, regardless of other results.
