Cape Breton Eagles News Release

BAIE-COMEAU- For the first time, the first goal wasn't the key to victory as the Screaming Eagles were edged 3-2 by the Drakkar in Baie-Comeau on early Saturday evening.

After winning their first seven games of the season when scoring first, the trend didn't hold on Saturday. In fact that first goal was the only marker of the opening period, and it came late- courtesy of Peyton Hoyt on the power play. 21 seconds before the buzzer, Hoyt stepped in from the top of the right circle and put the puck in the top left corner.

Almost half of regulation time would pass before the game had its next goal, but when the red light went on it would go on four times in less than five minutes. At 9:29 Éric Léger would tie the contest at 1. The Drakkar forward found himself in the corner and threw the puck behind the shoulder of Kevin Mandolese and it went in on the opposite corner.

Olivier Bourret would regain the lead for Cape Breton, scoring with a shot low along the ice from the left circle. But just 29 seconds later, Jordan Martel would use his speed to create a late 2 on 1 and give the home team a 2-1 advantage. And with just under six minutes to play, Vincent Lavoie would score on a breakaway to give Baie-Comeau a 3-2 lead.

Lavoie's goal came on Kyle Jessiman, who came in in relief of Kevin Mandolese after the second goal. By allowing the one winning goal, Jessiman was given the loss in spite of making 15 saves. Mandolese stopped 15 of 17 in his 31:30 of work.

There was some rough stuff in the second period as well, as Ty Fournier dropped the gloves with Justin Doucet. The linesmen intervened to ensure not many punches were thrown but penalties were assessed and Fournier was given a two minute instigator along with a ten minute misconduct. Baie-Comeau did not score on the power play as they could not convert on the man advantage all game.

Nor could the Eagles find a tying goal in the third period as Baie-Comeau's Antoine Samuel as well as Jessiman stopped all shots directed at them. Marc-André Dumont elected to pull his goaltender with almost two minutes left, but Cape Breton couldn't cash in on their opportunities and ended the road trip on a losing note. Baie-Comeau's Antoine Samuel would stop 29 shots in picking up the victory.

Pierre-Luc Dubois will not immediately be returning home the Screaming Eagles trip as he will stay in Quebec to represent Team QMJHL in the upcoming Canada/Russia super series. Dubois was held without a point in Baie-Comeau but did register eight shots on goal and was named the game's third star.

It's back home now for the Screaming Eagles as Friday night they'll host the Charlottetown Islanders in the Screaming Eagles annual anti-bullying night. Puck drop is at 7 PM. Tickets for the game can be purchased at Centre 200 box office, by calling 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
