Dragons Take Walk-Off Win in 10 Innings, 6-5

Dayton, Ohio - The Dayton Dragons scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 6-5 on Friday night. The win allowed the Dragons to avoid a sweep of the three-game series before a crowd of 7,693 at Fifth Third Field

The game was tied 4-4 after nine innings before Quad Cities took the lead with one run in the top of the 10th. The Dragons opened the bottom of the 10th with their free runner at second base, Lorenzo Cedrola, and he advanced to third when Jeter Downs opened the inning with a single to right field. After Leandro Santana popped out to the catcher, Malik Collymore drilled a single to center field. Cedrola easily scored from third, and when the ball rolled under the glove of charging outfielder Marty Costes, Downs raced around to score and end the game. It was the Dragons sixth walk-off win of the 2018 season.

The Dragons built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings. They scored one run in the first on Cedrola's sacrifice fly to bring in Jose Garcia from third. They added two more in the second, scoring on a wild pitch that brought in Santana from third, and a sacrifice fly by Alejo Lopez that scored Collymore.

Quad Cities started back with two runs in the sixth inning to make it 3-2. The Dragons added one in the seventh when Lopez singled, went to second on Garcia's hit, and scored on a single by Downs to make it 4-2. But Quad Cities tied the game in the eighth on a two-run home run by Colton Shaver.

The Dragons finished with 12 hits. Downs, Collymore, and Andy Sugilio each had two. Hendrik Clementina had a double off the left field wall that missed by inches of being a home run.

Dragons reliever Brian Hunter (1-0) earned the win in his first game with the Dragons this season. Hunter worked two and one-third innings and was charged with one unearned run in the 10th. He struck out four batters in the ninth including one who reached on a dropped third strike and error.

Dragons starting pitcher Wendolyn Bautista, filling in for Hunter Greene who is away from the club at the Futures Game in Washington D.C., allowed one run in five and one-third innings.

Notes: Quad Cities was 3 for 18 with runners in scoring position after going 0 for 16 in those situations in their win over the Dragons on Thursday...Dragons reliever John Ghyzel was placed on the disabled list on Friday and pitcher Aaron Quillen joined the team from Greeneville.

Up Next: The Dragons (10-12, 41-49) open a new three-game series against the Kane County Cougars (10-12, 45-46) on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. The Cougars are the Midwest League affiliates of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Patrick McGuff, a former pitcher at Sinclair Community College who spent two years in the Minnesota Twins organization, will make the start in his first appearance for the Dragons. Kane County will counter with Jeff Bain (7-3, 2.86).
