Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA. - The game didn't end how fans expected it to, but the Burlington Bees (5-16,35-55) still got a 7-2 victory against the Lansing Lugnuts (13-10,56-36). Zack Kelly (1-0) picked up his first win with the Bees in his second appearance with Burlington. Kelly went three innings, allowed just one hit, walked two, and struck out five. Kelly was supposed to start the game for the Bees, but he had issues with his flight, but ended up making it to the game. Maximo Castillo (7-4) got rocked by the Bees offense, allowing six runs on eight hits, two walks, and four strikeouts in five innings of work.
Lugnuts jump on Benitez in the first
Anfernee Benitez had to start the game, because of Kelly's travel issues, but Lansing got on him in the first. Samad Taylor led the game off with a single, and another single from Chavez Young put runners on first and second. Ryan Noda was hit by a pitch to load the bases and right after, Brandon Grudzielanek drove a single to left to score Taylor and Young, giving Lansing a 2-0 lead.
Olmeda ties things in the second
It was looking like a quick inning for the Bees after the first two hitters of the second were retired. However, Burlington managed to get runners on first and second after back to back singles from Julio Garcia and Connor Fitzsimons, and then Alexis Olmeda lined a hit into center that went for a double, scoring both runners and tying the game at 2-2.
Olmeda adds more in the fourth
Bees didn't wait till there was two outs to get hits in the fourth, as Kevin Williams Jr and Spencer Griffin hit back to back singles to start the inning. Fitzsimons then sent a soft single to left for his second hit, but Williams Jr was only able to make it to third. He wouldn't be at third very long though, because Castillo threw a wild pitch, allowing him to score and give the Bees a 3-2 lead. Olmeda then sent another ball to center, but this one went a lot further. Olmeda ended up hitting a three run homerun for his first homer with the Bees, giving them a 6-2 lead.
Torres adds run number seven in the seventh
Torii Hunter led the seventh inning off with his tenth double of the season and advanced to third on a groundout from Orlando Martinez. Franklin Torres sent a fly ball to right that allowed Hunter to tag up and give the Bees a 7-2 lead.
Ninth inning
The Lugnuts ended up scoring five runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. Before the Bees were able to bat in their half of the ninth, the game was stopped due to lightning in the area. The umpires ended up deciding the game could not be continued and the rule states that if the game is stopped and an inning is not completely finished, they must revert back to the inning before. Meaning that the game had to end in the eighth inning, erasing all the runs the Lugnuts scored in the top of the ninth, and giving Burlington a 7-2 victory.
Another great day from the offense
Burlington may just start getting things going in the lineup, after having another impressive night. Burlington totaled ten hits and struck out just six times. Olmeda led the offense, going 2-4 with a double, homerun, and five RBI's. Fitzsimons had a great night going 3-4, and Hunter went 1-3 in the leadoff spot. Burlington also got hits from Martinez, Williams Jr, Griffin, and Garcia.
Looking Ahead
The Bees will look to continue their offensive momentum in their first game against the Great Lakes Loons tomorrow night. Bees are expected to start Jose Soriano, who is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA in five starts. Soriano will hope to have better control in the game, as he has thrown ten walks in just twelve innings pitched. The Loons have not yet announced an expected starter for tomorrow's game. Great Lakes is coming off a great series against the LumberKings, where they allowed just two runs in three games.
