
Dragons Skid Hits Five as They Fall 3-2 to the Bees

Burlington, IA â The Burlington Bees (23-24, 52-63) played host the Dayton Dragons (19-27, 54-62) in the series opener Thursday night at Community Field. The Bees knocked off Dayton 3-2 handing the Dragons their fifth consecutive loss on the road. The Dragons have stumbled away from home as of late dropping 12 of their last 13.
Dayton's Justin Gillman (ND) got the starting nod for the Dragons and tossed 5.0 innings in his 6th start of the season. He allowed four hits and two runs (Both Earned) while striking out four and walking one. Gillman was looking for his first victory of the season, but will have to wait until his next start as he received a no decision.
Burlington countered with left hander Eric Ackerman (ND). Ackerman was outstanding, but also did not figure into the decision allowing two runs (Both Earned) in 7.0 innings pitched. The lefthander surrendered seven hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Dragons jumped out early in the top of the first inning. Matt Boone singled with one out and scored on Kevin Howard's 20th double of the season. Jarrod Schmidt followed with a single scoring Howard to make it 2-0 Dayton before Burlington even hit.
Burlington would counter with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Derrik Lytle doubled to left center field to start the inning for Burlington. He moved to third on a fly out to right and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kila Kaaihue to make it 2-1 Dayton after one inning of play.
The Bees struck again in the bottom of the third inning scoring a run tying the game 2-2. Bernard Stephens singled off the glove of Gillman, and stole second. He then moved to third on an infield single. Donnie Murphy lined a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Stephens and knot the score at 2-2.
The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Bees scored an unearned run off of Matt McWilliams (L, 3-3) to take the lead 3-2. Angel Sanchez singled and moved to second on a throwing error on left fielder Ryan Fry. Sanchez advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Donnie Murphy. Kaaihue came threw with a ground ball to plate Sanchez giving Burlington the lead and win 3-2. McWilliams took the loss allowing one unearned run in 1.2 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Steve Chamberlin (W, 3-6) picked up the win not allowing a hit or a run in 2.0 innings of work. He struck out four including the side in the ninth inning and walked one.
The Dragons continue the four game series against the Burlington Bees Fridayday night at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa with an 8 PM first pitch. 1410 EPSN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 7:30 PM. RHP Thomas Pauly will make the start for Dayton while Burlington's starter will be RHP Devon Lowery.
