Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Michael Anton and three relievers combined to scatter seven hits as the Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-2 on Wednesday night. With the win, the Kernels avoided a sweep of the three game set. Dayton won the first two games of the series Monday and Tuesday.
Cedar Rapids took the lead in the third inning against Dragons starting pitcher Curtis Partch (0-3). With one out, Andrew Romine singled and Jay Brossman walked. Romine and Brossman executed a double steal before Partch uncorked a wild pitch to score Romine. Gordie Gronkowski grounded to Todd Frazier at third base, and Frazier's throw to the plate bounced in front of catcher Jake Long for an error as Brossman scored to make it 2-0.
Dayton's Keltavious Jones drilled his second home run of the season with two outs in the third, a blast onto the lawn beyond the right field fence, to make it 2-1.
Cedar Rapids responded with three runs in the fifth to take command of the game. With two outs and the bases empty, Gronkowski walked and Tyler Johnson was hit by a pitch. Clay Fuller followed with a single to left to drive in Gronkowski and make it 3-1. Tyler Rhoden replaced Partch on the mound for Dayton, and allowed a two-run double to Anel De Los Santos to make it 5-1. Cedar Rapids scored again in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1.
Dayton's Brett Bartles lined a home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh, his first of the year, to make it 6-2, but the Dragons could not get back in the run column. The Kernals scored once in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Partch worked four and two-thirds innings and allowed three hits and five runs (four earned). He walked five and struck out four to suffer the loss.
Angel Cabrera went 2 for 3 with a single and a double for Dayton.
The Dragons are off on Thursday before opening a six game road trip in Kane County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). Right-hander Matt Klinker (1-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against Kane County's Scott Mitchinson (2-0, 3.00). Kane County is 15-4 on the season with the league's best record.
Notes: The Dragons assigned pitcher Andrew Bowman to the Reds extended spring training camp in Sarasota. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Rhoden was promoted to Dayton from extended spring training. Rhoden completed his college career in 2007 at Vanderbilt University. He will pitch out of the Dayton bullpen while Enerio Del Rosario, the club leader in saves to date, will be moved into the starting rotation and pitch on Saturday night at Kane County.
