Moncton Wildcats News Release

With the 2021 QMJHL Entry Draft coming up in two weeks, we are looking forward to welcoming our newest additions to the team. Our 2020-2021 team, although young, had a great run this season and we are looking forward to a bright future.

There have been many late round picks for the Wildcats who have turned into franchise players, such as former Captain Christian Gaudet, who was an 11th round pick, playing in 321 games and totaling 145 points, and winning the 2006 President Cup along the way.

Connor Richard and Alexis Daniel were late rounders who earned their stripes this season. Connor was drafted in the 10th round, 163rd overall by the Saint John Sea Dogs in 2018. Alexis was drafted this past summer in the 11th round, 201st overall by the Wildcats.

This year, fans took notice of a new face on the team, #12 Alexis Daniel. Growing up in Dieppe, Daniel was a Wildcats fan from a young age, coming up through minor hockey in the area, he is a local talent that turned a lot of heads during his rookie season in the QMJHL. As the season progressed so did Daniel, becoming a reliable player with and without the puck, brining energy every night.

"Alexis is a textbook example that it doesn't matter what round you get drafted in," added Ritchie Thibeau, Director of Hockey Operations. "He had a great summer and came to camp ready to earn a spot in our lineup. Alexis was very consistent all season long, which led to him being recognized as our Rookie of the Year, by our fans."

This year's QMJHL Draft will once again be online, something Alexis Daniel is familiar with after having gone through it himself. "Draft day was very exciting, yet stressful" added Daniel, when asked to reflect on that day last June. "I was anxious for the draft to get started on Saturday morning, but stressed not knowing 100% where or when I would be going. Headed into draft day I had discussions with many teams, however, I felt a very strong connection with the Wildcats, and had a really good feeling that is where I would end up. My family and friends were with me that day at the cottage, it was a great feeling to experience that with them and get drafted by my hometown team."

Draft Day Journal: Alexis Daniel

What was it like playing for your hometown team this season, and being able to step on the ice in that jersey for the first time?

It was incredible! I had great teammates, along with excellent coaches and staff. Playing for the best organization, in an amazing facility, it was nothing but the best.

What are you most looking forward to about next season?

I am looking forward to a normal season, hopefully without any COVID-19 restrictions. A season where we can practice and play in a normal setting. A season where fans can fil the Avenir Centre! I am looking forward to be part of a winning tradition here in Moncton .

What does your training look like this summer?

I am in the gym every morning, anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours. I'm also on the ice at least three times a week. There are a few other guys on the team who are still around this summer so it is nice to be able to continue to train with them.

You had a great first season in Moncton and were named rookie of the year. What memories from this season stand out the most?

My first goal at the Avenir Centre against the Saint John Sea Dogs will always be the most memorable moment of my first season in the league. Scoring a game winning goal in front of my family and friends is something I will never forget!

Growing up in Moncton, who was your favourite Wildcat?

The Saulnier twins were my favourite growing up!

Do you have a favourite Wildcat memory from the Moncton Coliseum?

I still remember going to the Moncton Coliseum with my family. My dad had season tickets, so we would watch most games. One of my best memories there wasn't specifically game related, when I was younger my initiation hockey team was chosen to play a small 5 minute game in one of the intermissions. It is something I still remember, and know how important those moments are for young fans in the community!
