Downs, Stark Combine to Shutout Suns

JACKSON, Tenn. - On his twenty-ninth birthday, Brodie Downs dealt seven scoreless innings while allowing one hit before 33-year-old veteran Denny Stark pitched two scoreless frames leading the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (52-47, 11-18) to a 2-0, Saturday night victory over the Jacksonville Suns (45-54, 12-17) in front of 4,510 at Pringles Park.

The Suns have now lost eight of their last ten games overall and trail the current series against West Tenn three games to one.

In his second professional season, Brodie Downs (5-0) allowed only a fourth inning single from Suns first baseman Mark Bellhorn along with two walks and two strikeouts over seven scoreless innings for the victory. After graduating high school in 1997, the right-hander was working as a land surveyor and pitching in a Sunday adult league in California until attending junior college starting in 2006. The Mariners drafted Downs in the 23rd round of the 2007 draft at 27 years of age.

West Tenn's offense supported Downs in the third inning scoring against Suns starter Cody White. Brent Johnson led off with a triple and later scored on a Greg Halman single for a 1-0 lead.

Cody White (3-4) picked up a tough luck loss after allowing only one run and six hits over six innings.

The Diamond Jaxx added an insurance run in the eighth inning against Suns reliever Travis Schlichting as Mike Wilson singled home Johan Limonta, who had tripled with one out, opening a 2-0 lead.

Denny Stark (1), who had missed nearly three years prior to 2008 after two different elbow surgeries, pitched two scoreless innings with one hit and one walk to pick up the save.
