Huntsville, AL- The Tennessee Smokies (44-58, 17-12) fall to the Huntsville Stars (58-41, 17-12), 4-2 at Joe W. Davis Stadium Saturday night in front of 3,277. The loss drops Tennessee to a first place tie in the Southern League North division with the Stars.
The Smokies took the lead in the fourth inning and have scored first in all four games in the series. Doug Deeds doubled with one out and then crossed home on a two-out Tyler Colvin single.
Huntsville rallied back to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Nic Ungs singled home Michael Bell with two retired tying the score at one. Michael Brantley then lined a ball to Colvin in leftfield that skipped past him and rolled toward the foul pole scoring Ungs. Brantley's triple broke the tie and then he scored on a Veal wild pitch.
Tennessee fought back in the top of the sixth. Nate Spears singled and Deeds doubled him to third. Jake Fox hit a sacrifice fly to center moving both runners. Spears scored and Deeds took third with the games tying run in a 3-2 game. In a controversial play at third Deeds was called out on a snap throw from the catcher Martin Maldonado.
Huntsville added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to build back the two run lead.
The Smokies and Stars play the final game series Sunday Night at Joe Davis in Huntsville. Mark Holliman (0-3, 5.44) will start for the Smokies opposite Mike Jones (0-3, 7.09). Tennessee will return home for a five-game set against the Montgomery Biscuits on Tuesday July22nd through Saturday July 26th. All game times are set for 7:15 pm.
