Carolina Takes Series with 7-1 Win

Carolina took their second straight game from the M-Braves in convincing fashion Saturday night, 7-1. Carolina got two runs in the second, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Andrew Jenkins' two-run homer in the second gave the Mudcats a 2-0 lead. Manuel Mayorson singled and, two batters later, Jenkins blasted his fourth homer of the year off the batter's eye in center field.

The Braves got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth. Reid Gorecki hit a hard grounder to third that was misplayed by Lee Mitchell allowing Gorecki to reach safely. Gorecki then advanced to third on a single by Kala Ka'aihue and scored when Van Pope hit into a double play. After four, Mississippi trailed Carolina, 2-1.

The Mudcats put up three more runs in the sixth. The first five batters in the inning reached base and three of them scored. Chris Coghlan walked and Gaby Sanchez, Mayorson, Mitchell and Jenkins followed with consecutive singles. Coghlan, Sanchez and Mayorson scored to push the Mudcats' lead to 5-1.

They put up two more runs in the seventh to go up 7-1. Coghlan and Sanchez singled and Mitchell's double to center plated them both.

Mississippi's Kris Medlen gave up two runs on six hits through five innings and left the game trailing 2-1. He fell to 3-5 on the season. Kevin Gunderson gave up three runs on four hits and a walk. Michael Nix gave up two runs in three innings of work. Brian Dumesnil tossed a scoreless inning to finish out the game.

Carolina's Brett Sinkbeil gave up an unearned run on three hits in five innings on the hill. He left the game with a 5-1 lead and improved to 4-8 on the year. Jeff Gogal threw one scoreless inning and Jacob Marceaux did the same. Todd Doolittle tossed two shutout innings to finish off the Braves.

The Braves and ‘Cats will play the fifth and final game of this five-game set Sunday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Mississippi's Deunte Heath will take on Carolina's Aaron Thompson in the series finale.

Sunday, July 20th will be the Braves second Sunday night game. Sunday is the M-Braves FamilyFest when a family of four can get four dugout level seats, four hot dogs or hamburgers, four 16 oz. soft drinks, four bags of peanuts or cracker jacks, four M-Braves baseball caps, two game programs and free fun zone wristbands for children, all for only $52. Following the game, all children 14 and under can run the bases at Trustmark Park.
