Dow Diamond Now Site of Blue Star Memorial Marker
June 9, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Blue Star Memorial marker outside Dow Diamond was officially dedicated today during a ceremony at the site.
The marker is one of 72 in Michigan and pays tribute to the U.S Armed Forces who've served during all wars. It's based on the original Blue Star flag that was displayed in family homes of those serving in World War II.
The marker at Dow Diamond was recently erected and is located in a garden area just outside the front entrance. This marker was provided through the efforts of the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc., and the Midland Garden Council.
Accepting the Blue Star Marker today were Loons President Paul Barbeau, and Midland mayor Maureen Donker. Speakers included Senator John Moolenaar, 36th District, who is Chair of the Senate Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee, and Rep. James Stamas, Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
"We are excited to be the newest site for a Blue Star Memorial Marker in Michigan," Barbeau said. "We are humbled by the opportunity to honor men and women who have served in our military here at Dow Diamond."
Deannie Picciotti, president of the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc., provided the official dedication of the memorial. Also honored today were Blue Star Essay winners Elizabeth Maraskine (1st place), and Diana Bickmore and Megan Bausch (2nd place winners).
The Great Lakes are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information, call 989-837-BALL or loons.com.
