Dayton Dragons News Release

Eastlake, Ohio-Lake County starting pitcher Luis Lugo struck out 10 batters over six strong innings as the Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-2 on Monday night. The Dragons went 3-3 on their six-game road trip and fell to 32-30 in the first half.

The loss dropped the Dragons to four and one-half games out of the wildcard slot with six games to play in the half. West Michigan won its sixth straight game on Monday night to move ahead of South Bend into first place in the Eastern Division, dropping South Bend into the wildcard position.

The Dragons trailed 5-2 entering the ninth inning and had an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead when they loaded the bases with no one out. Sammy Diaz and Sebastian Elizalde drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and Daniel Pigott singled to right. But new pitcher Ben Heller struck out Tanner Rahier, Gabriel Rosa, and Avain Rachal in order to end the game.

Lake County took the lead in the third inning on a two-out, three-run home run by Eric Haase. It was the 11th homer of the year for Haase, moving him into a tie for the league lead.

The Dragons started back in the fifth when Rahier doubled to start the inning, took third base on an error, and scored on Joe Hudson's two-out single past the shortstop into left field to make it 3-1. But Lake County responded with two runs in the sixth to push their lead to 5-1. The Dragons scored an unearned run in the eighth when Rachal singled, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2 and close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (4-5) worked the first five-plus innings, allowing six hits and five runs with two walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss.

The Dragons finished with just five hits. Hudson had the only RBI with his two-out single in the fifth.

The Dragons begin a six-game home stand on Tuesday, June 10 at Fifth Third Field against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:00 p.m. Amir Garrett (1-4, 5.17) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's German Marquez (2-3, 3.98).

All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.

Notes: The Midwest League Office announced on Monday that Romano has been added to the Eastern Division roster for the Midwest League All-Star Game on June 17.
