Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
The Hooks broke out their brooms for the first time this season as Chance Douglass tossed a complete-game shutout in Corpus Christi's 3-0 victory over the Arkansas Travelers Thursday night before 5,067 at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Winners of a season-best four straight, the Hooks blanked Arkansas for the second time in as many nights, improving to 17-30 in the first half.
Douglass (2-2) retired the first seven batters he faced until Ryan Leahy singled to right-center in the third. He then set down 13 of the next 14 Travelers before escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Douglass threw 114 pitches, limiting Arkansas to four hits in the longest outing by a Corpus Christi pitcher this season.
The Hooks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. With one away, Todd Self bounced into a fielder's choice and went first to third on Noochie Varner's double to center field. In the next at-bat, Arkansas (17-28) starter Amalio Diaz, making his Double-A debut, uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Self and advancing Varner to third. Neil Sellers then snuck a single through the left side to drive in Varner.
Diaz (0-1) worked six innings and yielded two runs off nine hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Corpus Christi tacked on an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Chris Saenz. Varner coaxed a two-out walk and rode home on Sellers' double that hit high off the wall in left field to give the Hooks a 3-0 advantage.
The Hooks open a six-game homestand Friday night against Springfield at 7:05. The Cardinals' Cory Rauschenberger (4-2) faces southpaw Troy Patton (2-4).
