Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive lineman Doug Brown will be the team's nominee for three of the six Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards at Grey Cup week in Montreal next month.
The 6-8, 290-pound tackle has been selected as Winnipeg's nominee for Most Outstanding Player, top defensive player and the unanimous selection as the top Canadian.
Brown has started every game for the Blue Bombers in 2008 and is up for the top Canadian honour for the sixth time.
Offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed is the team's nominee for the top offensive lineman. The right tackle has also started each game at that position.
Brendon LaBatte was Winnipeg's first round selection (sixth overall) in the 2008 Canadian College draft, and the left guard is the club's unanimous nominee for rookie of the year. The University of Regina product has started all but one game for the club and committed only two penalties in 16 games.
Graeme Bell, who recovered from an off-field attack that had him miss the entire 2007 campaign, rebounded to become Winnipeg's nominee for special teams player of the year. Bell is presently sixth in the league in special teams tackles (22).
The players were selected by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and the CFL head coaches. The East and West nominees for the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards will be announced on Tuesday, November 4.
The league-wide winners will be announced during Grey Cup week at the Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards on Thursday, November 20 at the Casino de Montréal.
