(Edmonton) Quarterback Ricky Ray once again leads the class of Edmonton Eskimo nominees for the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards.
In this first ballot, FRC representatives from each CFL city plus the respective head coach submitted votes for the six categories. Voters were asked to select players from their local CFL club, who through on-field performance excellence, best represent the awards' title.
The East and West nominees for the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards will be announced on Tuesday, November 4.
The league-wide winners will be announced during Grey Cup week at the Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards on Thursday, November 20 at the Casino de Montréal.
Outstanding Player - Ricky Ray*
Fifth Outstanding Player nomination (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007)
Earned CFL Offensive Player of the Week honours three times this season (Weeks 2, 6 and 10).
Broke Warren Moon's record to become first in career touchdown passes in Eskimo history (145)
Starting all 17 games, Ray is currently second in the league for passing with 399 completions in 580 attempts (68.8% average) for 5361 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has also rushed 71 times for 250 yards and five touchdowns.
Outstanding Canadian - Kamau Peterson *
Second Outstanding Canadian nomination (2007)
This is his second +1000 yards receiving season in a row.
Earned CFL Canadian of the Week when he led all Eskimo receivers with a season high 8 catches for 113 yards and 1 touchdown in the Labour Day Classic.
Currently leads all Eskimo receivers this year with 91 receptions for 1209 yards in 17 starts. He has four touchdowns on the year.
Outstanding Defensive - Jason Goss
Second Outstanding Defensive nomination (2007)
Earned CFL Defensive Player of the Week when he broke the Eskimo record for yards on interception returns on Sept. 13 vs. Hamilton. He also became second in CFL history for most interception return yards in a game. Goss had 144 yards on three interceptions and two touchdowns and tied Eskimo records for interception touchdowns in a game (2) and interceptions in a game (3)
Goss leads the Esks in both fumble recoveries (three) and interceptions (five) this season. In 17 starts he has been a defensive demon with 48 defensive tackles, six knockdowns, five interceptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns, three fumble returns for 55 yards, one quarterback sack and a tackle for a loss.
Outstanding Offensive Lineman - John Comiskey
Started all 17 games this season at centre
Was voted Offensive Lineman of the Week by his teammates
In his first year in Edmonton, he has become a leader on the Eskimo o-line, continually demonstrating hard work and commitment.
Outstanding Rookie - Tristan Jackson *
played in 16 games, including three starts starts at defensive back this season
He has earned CFL Special Teams Player of the Week honours three times (Weeks 3, 4 and 15)
Currently has 11 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, four knockdowns, a forced fumble and two interceptions, including one he ran back for a touchdown on July 10 vs, Toronto.
He has a league high of 802 yards on 75 punt returns and a team high of 839 yards on 35 kickoff returns.
Outstanding Special Teams - Tristan Jackson
played in 16 games (three starts) this season
He has earned CFL Special Teams Player of the Week honours three times (Weeks 3, 4 and 15)
He has 75 punt returns for 802 yards and two touchdowns (July 10 vs Tor and Oct 4 vs Wpg) and 35 kick returns for 839 yards and one touchdown (July 20 at Tor). He also has five missed field goal returns for 142 yards, his longest a 64-yarder in Toronto on July 20.
