Halifax Mooseheads News Release
The Halifax Mooseheads have the Cape Breton Eagles teetering on the brink of elimination from the QMJHL Playoffs following an 8-2 crushing of the Eagles at Centre 200 on Tuesday night. Alex Doucet enjoyed a 5-point night which included a natural hat trick as the Moose took a 3-nothing series lead with the chance to sweep on Wednesday in Sydney.
Doucet was the first star as he tied a Mooseheads franchise record for most points in a road game in the playoffs, matching a feat also accomplished by Marty Frk, Jonathan Drouin and Nikolaj Ehlers. Josh Lawrence was named the second star with one goal and three assists while their linemate Jordan Dumais also scored once and had three assists as the top line for the Herd combined for 13 points in the rout.
Jacob Newcombe was the lone bright spot for the Eagles with a pair of goals and had the home team ahead 1-0 through 20 minutes on a first period power play tally. However it was all Halifax in the final 40 minutes of play as they turned it up several notches to run away with their third straight win to start the first round series.
Markus Vidicek also scored twice for the Mooseheads in the win while Attilio Biasca had the other tally and the Captain also chipped in with a pair of helpers. Others players with assists included Jake Furlong and Zach L'Heureux with two each and one from defenceman Brady Schultz.
A natural Hat Trick in a span of 8:27 by the league's top sniper this season...Mr. Alex Doucet.
The Halifax power play was lethal at 3-for-5 while the Eagles went 1-for-5 on the man advantage. Mathis Rousseau was once again the winner between the pipes with 26 saves while Nicolas Ruccia made his second straight start for Cape Breton and was tagged with another loss by stopping 24 of 32 shots fired in his direction.
Newcombe's first period tally had the home team out in front heading into the middle period and a solid Tuesday night crowd of 3,360 were in good spirits at Centre 200, but it was the Alex Doucet show in the second period as his natural hat trick came in a span of 8:27 to give the Herd a lead that they would never relinquish. Dumais and Biasca really put the game out of reach with goals in the final 66 seconds of the period and Halifax had a 5-1 advantage through 40 minutes.
Markus Vidicek increased the lead to 6-1 early in the third while Jacob Newcombe gave the home fans something to cheer about at the 5:59 mark but Vidicek struck again followed by Josh Lawrence's third of the series to close out the scoring.
Game #4 is set for Wednesday night at 7pm at Centre 200 in Sydney where the Mooseheads will go for the sweep. Fans can watch the game on Eastlink Community TV, stream on CHL TV or listen live on City News 957 with Garreth MacDonald. Game #5, if necessary, would be held Friday night at 7pm back in Halifax at Scotiabank Centre.
