Hillsboro Hops News Release

It was Zombie Night at Ron Tonkin Field, and the Hillsboro Hops had to endure a few scares before the night was over. After seeing multiple large leads nearly erased, the Hops escaped zombie night with a razor thin 8-7 win over the Everett AquaSox.

The night's scoring began in the bottom of the second as the Hops (13-7) scored two runs as catcher Tyler Baker singled home both Nate Robertson and Pedro Ruiz. The base hit delivered two of Baker's three runs batted in for the night.

Hillsboro stomped on the gas pedal in the third scoring four runs thanks to RBI hits from Robertson, Ruiz and Taylor Ratliff. However, while the offense set the pace for the game, starting pitcher Scott Schultz had a night to remember. After throwing six complete innings, the former Oregon State Beaver recorded his first ever professional victory. Schultz allowed three runs, all of which came in the fifth inning, on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

The Hops led 8-4 after the seventh innings came to a close, but the AquaSox (5-15) had another rally for the Hops to survive. Dan Savas came on in relief for Schultz and allowed the first two runners of the eighth to reach base before giving up a mammoth home run to left field to Everett right fielder Corey Simpson. The home run cut the Hops' lead to one run.

Left-hander Zac Curtis came in for his fifth save in six tries after the Hops were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. Curtis struck out the first batter he faced, but would walk the next two that came to the plate. The AquaSox proceeded to pull off a double steal to put runners on second and third base. Everett center fielder Austin Cousino grounded a ball softly to Justin Gonzalez at shortstop who threw to second base to catch the first runner in a rundown, and Ruiz fired the ball to Baker who flipped it to Gonzalez who tagged the runner out at third for the final out of the game.

Ruiz finished the game 3-for-4 with two ground rule doubles and one run batted in. Grant Heyman finished the contest with two hits, as did Cesar Carrasco in his first game since June 20th.

Tomorrow's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Hear all the live action with Rich Burk and Matt Richert on Rip City Radio 620 AM beginning with the pregame show at 6:35 p.m.
