SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS ALSO ANNOUNCED
HIDALGO, TX: February 4, 2004 â The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 (af2) have announced that the af2 has assigned offensive / defensive lineman Raymond James to the Dorados 2004 roster.
"Raymond is a guy I expect to anchor the center/nose guard position and provide veteran leadership," said Dorados Head Coach Gary Gussman. "From everything I have seen and heard, I like how he executes at the center position."
James, a 6'5" 290-pound offensive and defensive lineman comes to the Dorados after spending last season with the af2's Greensboro Prowlers. With the Prowlers, James was on an offensive line that only allowed four sacks during the season. He also contributed offensively with a 12-yard reception. On the defensive side of the ball, James collected 11 tackles in 10 games. He also ranked fourth on the team with 2 sacks and tied for third on the team with one quarterback hurry. He played his only other season in the af2 during the 2000 season, appearing in 15 games with the Tallahassee Thunder. In Tallahassee, James gathered 13 tackles (5 unassisted) and 3 sacks. He also had two pass deflections and one interception. Over his af2 career, James has 24 tackles, 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in 25 games.
The 28 year-old James was an All-American at Thomas Jefferson High School, located in his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas. He graduated in 1994 and eventually went on to play two seasons at Texas A&M-Kingsville. After college, James went through NFL mini-camps with the Oakland Raiders before joining the af2 with Tallahassee. James also played two seasons (01,02) in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) with the Lake Charles LandSharks. He played 5 games with the LandSharks in 2002 and picked up seven tackles, and returned his only interception of the season for a touchdown.
This past fall, James experienced an aspect of football off the field. He served as the Defensive Line Coach for NCAA Div. III Greensboro College. The program's defense ranked as high as the second best defense in all of Division III football. James is the fourth player announced to the Dorados roster, joining Marcus Bradley (Def. Specialist), Will Burch (QB), Spencer Conley (Off./Def. Lineman).
