DORADOS HAVE OFF WEEK BEFORE HOSTING DAWGZ
4PM TAILGATE PARTY KICKS OFF GAME DAY FESTIVITIES NEXT SATURDAY
HIDALGO, TX: April 16, 2004 â The arenafootball2's (af2) Rio Grande Valley enjoy a bye week this weekend before returning to the Dodge Arena on Saturday, April 24th to host the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz.
It will be the second match-up between the two teams this season, as the two teams met last weekend at Oklahoma City's Ford Center. Yard Dawgz quarterback and last season's ArenaCup MVP Craig Strickland was 18 of 28 passing for 256 yards and 5 touchdowns, rushing for an additional two to lead the Yard Dawgz past the Dorados 55-17.
The Dorados took the opening lead on their first drive, as Eric Houle drilled a 24-yard field goal, but that would be the only lead the Dorados would have. Strickland led the Dawgz to four touchdowns off four drives in the first half. Dorados Quarterback Abel Gonzalez tried to maintain the first half pace, heaving an af2 record tying 49-yard touchdown pass to Mike Duncan. Starting quarterback Will Burch reentered the game at the close of the first half and tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Manwell Talbert with one-second left in the half to place the score at 28-17 Dawgz at halftime. The defense of the Dorados came out strong in the second half, stopping the Dawgz first two possessions, but they could not get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. The Dawgz finally put the game away late in the third quarter with three consecutive scoring drives. Two consisted of only one play, with Strickland hitting receiver Al Hunt for touchdown completions of 34 and 20 yards. Hunt ended up with 4 touchdowns in the game, including 5 receptions for 121 yards and an interception on defense to claim af2 US ARMY Ironman of the Week honors. The Dawgz defense kept the Dorados off the scoreboard the whole second half and ended the game's scoring with a defensive fumble recovery in the back of the endzone by Drew Mitchell to make it 55-17.
Rio Grande Valley (1-1) and Oklahoma City (2-0) are both off this weekend before reuniting next weekend. The 7:35 kickoff on April 24th will be preceded by game-day tailgating at the Dodge Zone on the west side Dodge Arena parking lot beginning at 4 PM. There will be a pork rib cook-off and amusement for the kids by Fun In The Sun. The Lacks Dorados Dance Team will be on hand and giveaways will be handed out by Clear Channel stations. Tailgaters are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks and grills to join in on the fun, which is also sponsored by South Texas Dodge Dealers and Budweiser / L&F Distributors.
Individual and season tickets are currently on sale and may be purchased by stopping by the Dodge Arena offices (2600 N. 10th St. in Hidalgo, Tx) or contacting them by phone at 956-843-7825. Additional ticket information and corporate opportunities are available by contacting the Dorados offices at 956-843-7825 or visit the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
