Your San Diego Riptide Update

San Diego Riptide News Release

RIPTIDE RECAP

LAST WEEK: The Riptide fell to 0-2 after dropping their home opener, 67-49, to the Green Bay Blizzard. Green Bay wide receiver Randall Lane hauled in six touchdown receptions and ‘Tide QB Kevin Feterik was forced to leave the game early due to a finger injury. Kane Claunch replaced Feterik under center, throwing five touchdowns, but it was too little too late to top Lane and the Blizzard.

THIS WEEK: San Diego kicks off intra-division play Saturday in Bakersfield. Although the Blitz may seem like a familiar opponent to Riptide fans, they are technically considered an expansion team in 2004 after the "original" Blitz moved to Fresno in the off-season, becoming the Central Valley Coyotes.

One member of the Blitz who should be quite familiar to the ‘Tide, however, is defensive standout Kenny Haslip. Haslip, a USC grad, spent the last two seasons in San Diego and, in 2003, led the af2 in tackles.

STANDINGS: The ‘Tide are 0-2 on the young season, but, since each team in the division has at least one loss, the Riptide could move into a first-place tie atop the National Conference's West Division with a win this week and a loss by Hawaii.

SHARK BITES: The ‘Tide still have only run three running plays on the season, one of which was a fumble recovery behind the line of scrimmage. On the year, the Riptide have been outgained on the ground, 61 to -8... Another major bug-a-boo for San Diego has been turnovers. The ‘Tide have committed 10 turnovers this season, compared to just three by their opponents... WR Ryan Smith is just two TD's shy of his career high for a season... Dwight Carter set a new Riptide record with 10 catches in Week 2... Claunch's five TD's last week were his most in one game since throwing six on June 28, 2003 against Wichita... All ‘Tide games can be heard live with Mark Rogandino calling the play by play on www.WorldTalkRadio.com...

Blizzard Bury Riptide, 67-49

SAN DIEGO - The Riptide were met with an avalanche of touchdowns Friday night, getting trounced by the Green Bay Blizzard, 67-49, in their home opener. Green Bay wide receiver Randall Lane reeled in six touchdown receptions and the ‘Tide once again changed quarterbacks in mid-game, dropping their record to 0-2.

Despite an 18-point deficit in the third quarter, San Diego wouldn't say die, scoring 14 unanswered points on touchdown passes from Claunch to Carter and Ryan Smith, respectively, pulling to within four as the quarter ended. Once again, however, Lane proved he couldn't be stopped. The red-hot Blizzard receiver hauled in his fifth touchdown reception of the day, this time a 40-yarder from Greisen, and the Blizzard went back up by 11.

The Blizzard continued to pile it on after that, switching QB's back to Gile, and adding another seven points on a TD pass to Garth, then Lane reeled in yet another score with 6:38 left to play to put Green Bay up by 25. San Diego added a late score, but it was a moot point, losing by a final of 67-49.

‘Tide Trivia

Q. Dwight Carter had 10 catches in the ‘Tide's Week 2 loss to Green Bay, setting a new team record. Who's record did he break? (answer at the bottom)

Riptide Make Roster Moves

Still looking for his first win as head coach of the San Diego Riptide, Mouse Davis has made several roster moves to prepare for this week's match up in Bakersfield, adding quarterback Tony Corbin and reassigning WR/DB Darnell Lacy.

Corbin, who spent one game on the Riptide roster in 2003, was added to the team this week after Week 2 starter Kevin Feterik was moved to the short-term injured reserve with a finger injury. Feterik left the ‘Tide's game against Green Bay in the second quarter after injuring the index finger on his throwing hand, giving way to Riptide veteran Kane Claunch. Corbin will replace Feterik on the roster in Week 3 against the Bakersfield Blitz and will serve as Claunch's backup as the team plays its first intra-divisional game of the season.

The 6-foot-four-inch, 215-pound Sacramento State graduate was a First-Team All-Conference player his senior season and completed 351 passes for 4,866 yards and 34 touchdowns during his college career. He was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL draft in 1997 by the San Diego Chargers and went on to spend time in NFL Europe, Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.

The New Look West

The names of the teams in the National Conference's Western Division of af2 may sound familiar to die-hard ‘Tide fans - San Diego, Bakersfield, and Hawaii - but Central Valley, who are they?

The Central Valley Coyotes, coached by former Riptide Head Coach/GM Cree Morris, are actually the "old" Bakersfield Blitz, an original member of the Western division. The Blitz were sold during the off-season to a group of investors in Fresno, California, including George Chung, the CEO of American Champion Sports Television, Inc. and five-time World Karate champion, as well members of the Tachi-Yokut Tribe, who are a part of the Kumeyaay nation along with the owners of San Diego-area casinos such as Sycuan.

The ownership group made their mark on the franchise immediately. They began by moving the team north to Fresno, a vow they had made upon purchase of the franchise. Secondly, they changed the team's name to the Coyotes, the symbol of the Tachi-Yokut tribe.
