Hidalgo, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 (af2) were assigned wide receiver / defensive back John Jefferson today as the club prepares for their Week 7 contest against the Central Valley Coyotes. Jefferson, a 5-11 189-pound native of Wilmington, Delaware joins the Dorados after playing seven games this season in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) with the Lakeland (FL) Thunderbolts. He registered 27 tackles (22 solo) with the âBolts and led the team in pass breakups with 8, while also nabbing an interception. The 25 year-old Jefferson also ranked second on the club in missed field goal return yards with 16 and had three kickoff returns for 38 yards.
Prior to turning pro, Jefferson was a member of the Delaware State University football program. He joined Delaware State as a quarterback after spending his high school tenure at Concord High School as a standout quarterback, but later switched to a wide receiver and starting defensive back. Jefferson compiled 8 tackles and 2 interceptions in his final season in 2002. After completing his college career, Jefferson completed camp workouts with the af2 Richmond Speed and the Arena Football League's Chicago Rush, Philadelphia Soul, Tampa Bay Storm and the Las Vegas Gladiators.
With Jefferson's arrival, the Dorados will be forced to make one roster move prior to Saturday's contest in Fresno, California against the West Division leading Central Valley Coyotes. The Dorados next home game is Saturday, May 21st as the Dorados host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers for a non-division contest at Chase Field inside the Dodge Arena.
