Manchester Wolves News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. (May 11, 2005) â The arenafootball2 league office announced yesterday that Manchester Wolves defensive specialist William "Roc" Haith has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 6 of the 2005 season.
Haith (5-11, 190, Liberty), playing in his second season, was all over the field in Manchester's 46-37 victory over the Louisville Fire last Friday night. The win was big for the Wolves as they moved into a tie for first place in the East Division. Against the Fire, Haith recorded 12.0 tackles (6UA, 12A). His 12 tackles tie him for second most in a game this season. His 13.0 tackle performance against Macon on April 29 still stands as the best tackling performance this season. Although one of Haith's assisted tackles was for a loss, he made his biggest impact in the secondary, breaking up seven passes from Louisville QB Matt Sauk. His individual efforts played a big part in helping the Wolves to their fourth straight win.
"I prepared real hard for the game (against Louisville) and I played well," Haith said. "It feels good when you work hard and you receive recognition as a result of it. This just makes me want to step my game up to another level and continue to improve."
This is the first-ever weekly award for Haith and the third for a Wolves player this season. Jake Eaton won Offensive Player of the Week in Week 3 and J.J. McKelvey won U.S. Army Ironman of the Week last week.
"I'd say he (Haith) certainly deserves the award," Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett said. "With the exception of one play, Roc played about as well as anyone I've seen play in the af2."
Though he was honored for his performance in one game, Haith has been a consistent performer for the Wolves all season. Through the first five games, the former Liberty product currently ranks among the league leaders in tackles (2nd â 40.0) and passes defended (T-3rd â 12).
This Saturday night the Wolves (4-1) travel to Albany, NY to take on their East Division adversaries, the Albany Conquest. The Conquest (2-3) are currently in fifth place in the division standings, but have turned the corner a bit of late, scoring two straight wins after starting the year 0-3. They are led by veteran QB D. Bryant, who has thrown for 1,085 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. He also leads the team with 55 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Travis Coleman stands out on the defensive side for Albany with a team-leading 19.0 total tackles and two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns. The Wolves defeated Albany earlier in the season on the road, 56-49, on April 23.
