Alabama Steeldogs News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. â Hoping to turn around a dismal start to their 2005 season, the Birmingham Steeldogs are making a quarterback change.
Roger Linn, who played for the Steeldogs in 2004, will serve as Birmingham's new starting quarterback as the team prepares for its cross-country trek to San Diego. Linn has spent the 2005 regular season with the Manchester Wolves, serving predominately as a backup to the Wolves' star signal-caller, Jake Eaton.
In 2004, Linn began the season as the Steeldogs backup quarterback. In limited action, he completed 3 of 7 passes for 24 yards and one touchdown. Linn then moved to Odessa, Texas to play for the Odessa Roughnecks of the Intense Football League, a now-defunct indoor league based in the Lone Star State. Coached by former Birmingham assistant Chris Williams, and developing in the same offensive scheme employed by Steeldogs' Head Coach Bobby Humphrey, Linn thrived. He started 14 games for the team amassing 3,063 passing yards, 72 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns.
"I believe that Roger will come in here and immediately make a difference for our team," Humphrey said. "In Roger, you have a quarterback that not only has experience in our system, but he has been very successful and very consistent in that system.
"And I think if there is anything we need right now as a team, it is consistency. That will lead to success."
In 2003, Linn played for the Tri-City Diesel of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). He started 10 games for the Diesel, passing for 1,537 yards and 31 touchdowns, while rushing for 266 yards and four touchdowns. He was named NIFL Player of the Week after scoring eight touchdowns in one game.
Linn is a graduate of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He played two years of junior college football for Victor Valley in California prior to attending UAPB, where he was an All-Conference All-American and holds several passing records.
