Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
DORADOS ADD SOME SPECIALISTS TO ROSTER
KINGSVILLE STAR EDDIE MOTEN AND UNION COLLEGE RECEIVER ERNIE SAMUEL JOIN SQUAD
HIDALGO, TX: May 12, 2004 â The arenafootball2's (af2) Rio Grande Valley Dorados were assigned defensive specialist Eddie Moten and offensive specialist Ernie Samuel by the af2 this past weekend, and the two have joined the Dorados this week in preparation for their game Saturday in Fresno, California against the 0-5 winless Central Valley Coyotes.
Moten (MOten) is a 5'10" 185-pound native of Dallas, Texas and another player with ties to Texas A&M University - Kingsville. The 22 year-old played his last two seasons of eligibility at TAMUK, where he had 9 interceptions, 61 tackles and 17 pass break-ups. Moten had five interceptions in 2002 as a junior and converted four of them into touchdowns to earn Lone Star Conference First Team honors. As a senior in 2003, Moten had 27 tackles and four interceptions and was named as a Don Hansen Honorable Mention All-American and was the Lone Star Conference Defensive Back of the Year. Moten was also an ALL-LSC selection, D2Football.com First Team All-American and was named as a West Region Defensive Player of the Year. The Lancaster High School product spent his freshman and sophomore college seasons at Trinity Valley Community College.
Samuel is a native of Miami, Florida, which is the same hometown as Dorados Head Coach Gary Gussman. He grew up fairly close to Gussman, but Samuels ties to the Dorados do not include him. The 5'9" 175-pound Samuel played three seasons at Kentucky's Union College, where he was a teammate of Dorados LB/FB Herman Lovett. In 2001, Samuel was Union's leading receiver with 58 catches for 745 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also contributed 454 yards in kickoff returns with an average of 21.6 yards per return. Samuel continued to lead the team in receptions in 2002 with 37 catches for 416 yards. The 25 year-old transferred to Union after spending a season at Fergus Falls Community College in Minnesota.
The Dorados are coming off their first home loss of the season with a 35-28 defensive battle with the unbeaten Southwest Division leading Wichita Stealth. With the win, the Stealth moved into the #1 spot atop the af2 Weekly Coaches' Poll, which was announced today. Rio Grande Valley made their first ever appearance in the poll last week, ranking in at #12, and they maintained that spot in this week's poll despite the loss. Rio Grande Valley flies out of the Valley Friday morning to Fresno, California and will face the Coyotes Saturday evening at 9:30 PM (CST). The Dorados are 1-1 on the road this season and seek a win to climb up the Southwest Division Standings in the af2's National Conference. They are currently tied for third place with Tulsa and chasing Oklahoma City and Wichita. Central Valley is looking for their first win on the season and their first on home turf (0-3). The Coyotes are joined with Laredo as the only winless teams in the league. Saturday's game broadcast can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1240 AM with Chris Due calling the action or by logging onto www.doradosfootball.com to catch the online broadcast.
Individual tickets are currently on sale for the Dorados next home game, which is scheduled for May 22nd against the Laredo Law, and may be purchased by stopping by the Dodge Arena offices (2600 N. 10th St. in Hidalgo, Tx) or contacting them by phone at 956-843-7825.
