Stealth own top spot in Week 7 poll
May 12, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - For the second time in three weeks and by a margin of 42 points the undefeated Wichita Stealth have secured the No. 1 position in the weekly Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. The Quad City Steamwheelers climbed to the second spot this week, meaning a matchup of No. 1 versus No. 2 is on tap when the Stealth take on the Steamwheelers Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET at The Mark of the Quad Cities.
The Stealth garnered 281 points, including 21 first-place votes in this week's poll. Quad City totaled 239 points with one first-place vote. Coming in third was the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers with 219 points and one first-place vote. The Louisville Fire (fourth place) and the Birmingham Steeldogs (seventh place) were the only other teams to receive a first-place vote.
Aside from the Stealth and Steamwheelers, other teams gaining spots in the Top 12 this week included Tennessee Valley, Oklahoma City and Hawaii. The Vipers went from fifth to fourth, the Yard Dawgz jumped from eighth to sixth and the Islanders moved up one spot from ninth to eighth.
Along with the battle of No. 1 and No. 2, there is one additional matchup of Top 12 teams on tap as No. 11 Florida Firecats are scheduled to take on the No. 7 Birmingham Steeldogs on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Birmingham-Jefferson County Civic Center.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
