Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - Ryan Donovan's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Logan Taylor for the eventual game-winning run, as the Green Bay Bullfrogs defeated the Battle Creek Bombers 8-7 at Joannes Stadium on June 26.
The Bullfrogs battled back from a five-run deficit to win their fourth consecutive game and improve to 18-12, just one game behind Kenosha in the Northwoods League South Division.
The Bullfrogs scored first in the bottom of the first inning. With runners at the corners, Donovan struck out, but Danny Rosenbaum broke for second base. Bombers' catcher Niko Pacheco threw to second, and Taylor scored from third base.
Two batters later, Matthew De La Rosa lined a RBI single to right-centerfield to score Rosenbaum and give Green Bay a 2-0 lead.
The Bombers cut the deficit in half in the top of the third with a run-scoring single for Dan Swain and took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.
The inning began with a pair of singles for Battle Creek, and Cayce Bredlau bunted to third. De La Rosa fielded the ball and threw it past Rosenbaum at first base to plate a run. Brennon Lund added a RBI single to score Hank Truluck, as starter Sam Brunner exited the game.
Brunner pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out three in his third start of the season.
Matt McCarthy came on in relief, and the next batter Dan Swain reached on an error by shortstop Jack Strunc, and Bredlau scored on the play.
With one out in the inning, Taylor caught a fly ball in center for the second out and heaved the ball to home plate to throw out Lund, but the Bombers still held a 4-2 advantage.
Battle Creek added to its lead in the sixth. Following two singles, Christian Helsel hit a fly ball that Taylor could not see, and the ball dropped for a RBI single.
Two batters later, Lund hit a bases-loaded single past Rosenbaum to score two more runs and give the Bombers a 7-2 lead.
The Bullfrogs cut the deficit to three with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of sixth and tied the game at 7 with three more in the seventh. Robb Paller and Donovan each scored on wild pitches in the inning, and Paul Jacobson came around to score on an error by the catcher Pacheco.
With runners at the corners and two outs in the top of the eighth, Paller made a nice running catch to end the inning and set up Donovan's game-winning hit.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Taylor reached with a hit-by-pitch with one out and advanced to scoring position with a balk. Paller walked, and two batters later, Donovan singled past second baseman Lin Li. Darrell Handelsman waved Taylor home to give the Bullfrogs an 8-7 lead.
Jake Stolley pitched a perfect ninth inning, as he picked up his first win of the season in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Green Bay will begin a six-game road trip on Saturday against Battle Creek. The Bullfrogs will return to Joannes Stadium on July 3 for a game against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at 7:05 p.m.
