Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Adelanto, CA - Inland Empire 66ers starter Donn Roach has been outstanding all season long, but he may have put together his best outing of the year with a seven shutout inning performance Saturday night in hitters haven High Desert. The win gets the 66ers (9-7) to a game out of first in the California League South behind the Mavericks (10-6) with one game left on the series.
Roach had three straight quality starts to begin the year heading into the Saturday night showdown with the league's best offense, but the 66ers right-hander was on his game and denied the Mavs a third straight victory. Roach cruised through seven innings, allowing just six hits and zero walks while striking out two. Even when the team committed two errors behind him, Roach would not be phased, he merely picked up right where he had left off dispatching High Desert hitters.
Offensively, Inland Empire got two clutch hits on the night to put their runs on the board. In the 4th inning with the game still scoreless Jett Bandy came to the plate with two down and two in scoring position, and promptly sent a single to the outfield for the games first two runs. Later in the 7th Brian Hernandez posted his second hit of the night to drive in Bandy from second and secure the insurance Inland Empire nearly needed.
Nearly was the operative word because while the 66ers bullpen did allow a run they were able to decisively shut the door on the Mavs comeback hopes. Closer Ryan Chaffee struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th without missing a beat to seal the 66ers victory.
Inland Empire will attempt to get back into a tie for first place with a win Sunday. The game kicks off at 3:05 from Adelanto, and can be heard on the home of 66ers baseball KCAA 1050 AM beginning with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Pre-Game show at 6:55. Inland Empire will return home to begin a seven game homestand on Monday, hosting the Lake Elsinore Storm for game one.
