Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The fun continued at Sam Lynn on Seat Cushion Giveaway Saturday, as the Bakersfield Blaze rode the right arm of Kyle Lotzkar to its 6th consecutive win, and 3rd straight over the San Jose Giants, 4-1.

The game had a similar feel to the previous night, as both starters got off to strong starts. San Jose starter Shawn Sanford (L, 3-1), a former teammate of Bakersfield's Stephen Hunt, retired the first 7 Blaze batters before surrendering a 1-out single to Bryson Smith in the 3rd. After a flyball, and a walk, the Blaze got on the board when Devin Lohman singled to center to score Smith for a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, it was Smith who started the only other rally Bakersfield would need. Smith was hit by a pitch with 1 out, and on the very next pitch Tucker Barnhart unloaded on a fastball for a 2-run homer, and the Blaze grabbed a 3-0 lead.

That was all Lotzkar (W, 2-0) would need. Kyle, the former supplemental first round pick, gave up just 2 hits and 3 walks through 6 innings, striking out 5 Giants en route to his second 6-inning performance of the year. Devin Lohman provided the Blaze an insurance run with his first homer of the year in the 8th. The Blaze bullpen trio of Mike Griffin, Dan Wolford, and Brooks Pinckard (S, 3) worked the final 3 frames, giving up just 1 run, to lock down the win.

The victory for Bakersfield moves the club to 9-7 on the season, and the club is now 3-4 against the Giants after getting swept in San Jose last weekend. The Blaze trails the Giants by just 2.5 games in the North. The series concludes tomorrow afternoon at 1:15, when Dan Renken will oppose Taylor Rogers in a Chevy Youth Baseball Kids Club Sunday, where all Kids Club members get in free! The game can be heard live on BakersfieldBlaze.com, with Dan Besbris calling all the action - the pregame show begins at 1:05pm.
