February 1, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release

This year's Don Cameron Potato Night, the kick-off event to the month-long February Potato Blitz, is extra special as House of Friendship marks 75 years of service to the community.

Local broadcaster, Don Cameron and the Kitchener Rangers invite local hockey fans to show their support for the 17th annual Don Cameron Potato Night with the Kitchener Rangers at The Aud, on Friday, February 7th at 7:30 pm, when the Rangers take on the Oshawa Generals. Fans can show their support by making donations or dropping off potatoes on their way into the game.

"Spuddy and I are excited about the Don Cameron Potato Night, the launch event for the February Potato Blitz, our first campaign in our 75th year of service. " explains John Neufeld, Executive Director.

The February Potato Blitz Campaign focuses community efforts on sharing the gift of food with our neighbours in need by collecting potatoes and donations throughout the month of February. Each year the House of Friendship uses over 300,000 pounds of potatoes in its emergency food hampers and meals assisting people in our 18 programs. When we run out of potatoes in our storage area, cash donations will be used to buy potatoes for 20 cents/pound, stretching donor dollars even further!

Don Cameron Potato night is a wonderful way to build momentum, as the first of three February Potato Blitz events.

On Saturday February 22nd, shoppers in the KW area can also "join in the game" and participate in the Super Market Blitz, 9 am - 3 pm, at 26 participating super markets locations. Community-minded volunteers will be available to collect potatoes and cash donations during the hours of the Super Market Blitz.

Lastly, you can come and warm up with good company and good food with your friends at House of Friendship at the Community Potato Lunch, Friday February 28, 12pm -1 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kitchener. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a delicious potato lunch, a wonderful array of potato dishes that will be sure to satisfy. There is no cost for lunch, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

At other times donations can be made at the Emergency Food Hamper Program, 807 Guelph St., Kitchener, (Mon.- Fri., 9 am-4pm), at the Charles Street Men's Hostel, 63 Charles St., E., Kitchener (anytime) or mailed to House of Friendship, PO Box 1837, Station C, Kitchener, N2G 4R3.
