Shoulder Surgery Shuts Down Gomes

North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Calvin Gomes will miss the rest of the North Bay Battalion's season after undergoing shoulder surgery, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Saturday. Right winger Gomes had what was described as "shoulder instability reconstruction" Friday at a Toronto hospital and is off the ice for four months, said Battalion athletic therapist James Borrelli.
Gomes, who has returned to his Mississauga home for the recuperative period, experienced continuing injury to his right rotator cuff in a 4-2 victory Dec. 12 over the visiting Barrie Colts and hasn't played since then. He sat out a number of games before that with shoulder problems.
Rookie Gomes, who turns 18 on March 13, played 12 games this season without registering a point. An eighth-round pick in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection, he played six games last season with the Brampton Battalion without recording a point but had 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 49 games split between the junior A Orangeville Flyers and junior B Brampton Bombers.
The loss of Gomes leaves the Battalion with 23 available players on the roster as the team entertains the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at 2 p.m Sunday.
The Troops erupted for a season-high four goals in the third period Friday night to defeat the host Oshawa Generals 5-1. Goaltender Brendan O'Neill, starting for the first time in 11 games, made 25 saves for the Battalion, which has a won-lost-extended record of 26-18-6 for 58 points, second in the Central Division.
