D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (August 28, 2006) - D.C. United announced today that midfielder Domenic Mediate has undergone a season-ending surgery to repair a broken distal fibula, which occurred late in Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Galaxy. In order to set the bone, a plate was attached to the bone in the procedure performed at VA Hospital Center by Dr. Chris Annunziata. Mediate will be fitted with a cast tomorrow.
"We are very disappointed that Domenic will be out with this injury," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "He has had a great first year with D.C. United and we are optimistic that he will return to the field in the near future."
Mediate's injury occurred just five minutes after entering the game as a substitute in the 73rd minute. The outside midfielder was carrying the ball up the right side of the field when Galaxy defender Ugo Ihemelu attempted to tackle the ball away from Mediate, causing the 26-year old to fall awkwardly on his right leg. After being examined by Head Athletic Trainer Brian Goodstein, Mediate was removed from the field on a stretcher.
The University of Maryland product was drafted by the Columbus Crew in the second round (23rd overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. Mediate played in 11 games (four starts) for the Crew in 2005, scoring one goal and an assist. On March 14, 2006, D.C. United acquired Mediate from Columbus in exchange for a 2007 fourth round supplemental draft pick. Mediate has appeared in eight games (two starts) this season for the Black-and-Red.
