Dogs Fall 8-2 in Marathon Series Opener

Rosemont, Ill. - Dogs pitchers allowed a season-high 15 hits en route to an 8-2 series-opening loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Monday night at Impact Field.

The three hour, 40 minute game, which was the longest nine-inning game of the season for Chicago, saw baserunners in 17 of its 18 half innings.

Fargo-Moorhead stepped on the gas pedal offensively from the onset Monday as the first five RedHawks reached base in the top of the first. Fargo-Moorhead sent eight men to the plate in the inning, and received RBI hits from Charlie Valerio and Brennan Metzger to push in front 3-0.

Kenny Wilson scratched a run back for Chicago in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit for Chicago to 3-1. The RedHawks however, would add another tally in the top of the second inning on a second RBI knock from Valerio.

The score would remain 4-1 until Chicago capitalized on three walks in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wilson, who led the frame off with a base on balls, scored from third on a throwing error from Valerio. Fargo-Moorhead starter Sebastian Kessay issued all three walks, and was chased from the game before completing the fifth inning. Kessay walked seven Dogs hitters in total over four and one-third innings. The southpaw allowed two earned runs on four hits and earned a no-decision.

Dogs starter Josh Goossen-Brown danced in and out of trouble throughout his six-inning start, scattering nine hits and four walks of his own, and stranding nine RedHawks on base. Goossen-Brown threw a season-high 139 pitches, and allowed two earned runs in a losing effort.

The game remained close until The RedHawks blew the door open with a four-run top of the eighth. Fargo-Moorhead sent nine men to the plate and collected four base knocks to go along with a walk and a hit batsmen. The RedHawks received RBI from Metzger, Keury De La Cruz, Chris Jacobs, and Tim Colwell in the frame.

Jacobs finished the game 3-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, and Metzger reached base five times in six plate appearances. Every player in the Fargo-Moorhead starting lineup collected a hit sans Maikol Gonzalez.

Chicago walked eight times in the game, but only plated one of the free passes. The Dogs left 10 men on base and finished the game 1-12 with runners in scoring position.

The Fargo-Moorhead bullpen pitched the final five and two-thirds innings scoreless to preserve the victory for the RedHawks.

With the loss, Chicago falls to 24-37 on the season, while Fargo-Moorhead moves to 33-27 with the win, and now sits in first place atop the Northern division.

The two teams will resume their three-game set on Tuesday. First pitch from Impact Field is scheduled for 11:35 a.m. The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 11:15 a.m.
