Chicago Dogs News Release
Rosemont, Ill. - Dogs bats were quieted by the Gary SouthShore RailCats Tuesday night as the RailCats took both legs of a doubleheader, each by a score of 5-1 at Impact Field.
Chicago mustered just nine hits over 14 innings Tuesday as Gary SouthShore starter Lars Liguori tossed seven strong innings in game one, and four different RailCats pitchers pieced together seven more quality frames in game two.
Gary SouthShore scored three early runs in game one, thanks to five two-out hits against Dogs starter Josh Goossen-Brown. The RailCats received RBI extra-base hits from D.K. Carey and Will Savage to push in front 3-0. Goossen-Brown tossed five and one-third innings and allowed all five earned runs in his seventh loss of the year.
Chicago scratched across their only run of game one on an RBI fielder's choice from Stephen Perez in the bottom of the fourth inning, but left the bases loaded in the frame, and would tally just one more hit the rest of the way.
The pendulum in game two swung on one pitch in the top of the fifth inning. With Gary SouthShore in front 1-0, Randy Santiesteban hit a two-out, two-strike, grand slam to left field to give the RailCats a 5-0 cushion. The grand slam came against Chicago starter Jared Carkuff, who pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing all five earned runs in a loss.
The long ball was the first grand slam hit by the RailCats this year and the first one allowed by Chicago pitching this year as well.
The Dogs scored their only run of game two on a sacrifice fly from Dalton Blaser in the bottom of the sixth inning, but would not tally another baserunner en route to the 5-1 defeat.
With the pair of losses Chicago falls to 38-49 on the year, while Gary SouthShore moves to 50-37 on the season with the victories.
The two teams will meet again Wednesday at Impact Field as Chicago sends southpaw Tommy Thorpe to the mound looking to stave off a sweep. Gary SouthShore will counter with right-hander Keaton Steele.
First pitch on the final Wiener Wednesday of 2018 at Impact Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in line at the Impact Field ticket office or online at www.thechicagodogs.com/tickets/
The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
