Chicago Dogs News Release

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Nobody was going to beat the Dogs today.

Chicago brewed the perfect storm of lights out pitching, blazing hot bats and rock solid defense to secure a 14-0 display of dominance and complete the sweep over the Lake Country DockHounds.

Just about every participating Dogs player excelled in this game. Every hitter in the lineup tallied a hit and five crossed home plate two or more times. K.C. Hobson put together a strong Father's Day performance together by going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Cosimo Cannella also starred with a 2-for-4 game, including a home run and unassisted double play.

Offensive shine is not to discredit the pitching. Jordan Kipper was simply stellar in his fourth start back in Chicago, posting six shutout innings, four hits, one walk and six strikeouts. This was Kipper's third start of allowing one run or less in five innings or more.

The Dogs' offense passed the bat early , but benefitted from a few lucky breaks. Charlie Tilson and Michael Crouse both reached off of errors. The two advanced from a Ryan Lidge groundout, and Hobson got Chicago on the board first with a sacrifice fly. Danny Mars then doubled into the right field gap to score Crouse easily and that made the game 2-0 after one inning.

It was more of the same in the second once the Dogs got the bases loaded quickly. Crouse hit a sacrifice fly of his own, and Lidge singled following that to make the score 4-0. Chicago tacked on one more from a Hobson single.

Cannella continued his strong series with a towering home run to lead-off the fourth. It was the third baseman's second of the season, both coming this weekend.

Like clockwork, Chicago loaded up the bases once more through middle-of-the-order production and it was capitalized on by Grant Kay, who singled to make the game 7-0. Trent Bauer's walk with the bases loaded made the margin eight while still in the front half of the game.

While the offense rolled, Kipper did not let the DockHounds get a breath of air. Once Lake Country began to sniff scoring position, the righty got big out after big out. With one out in the third, Jake Snider hit a double to try and work his team into the game. In response, Kipper struck out both T.J. Bennett and Gabriel Noriega. In the fourth and fifth inning, he picked up inning-ending double plays.

The fifth inning brought up Cannella as the leadoff man once more, and he got on base via hit-by-pitch. The next four Dogs hit singles, which scored three more runs.

Kay, who has found a revived source of confidence in his swing, worked a tough at-bat against Taylor Bloye. The second baseman fouled off five straight 3-2 pitches, then turned on a fastball to drive a double into left field. Lidge scored easily. Trent Bauer hit a RBI single to score Hobson and make the score 14-0. Poetically, Cannella ended the inning.

Chicago capped off the afternoon with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed in three innings by their bullpen.

With the win, the Dogs wins their first ever series against the DockHounds. Just as significantly, it was a battle of the dads. Both manager Butch Hobson for Chicago and Jim Bennett for Lake Country carry their sons, K.C. and T.J., on the roster and both sit in the heart of the lineup. T.J. Bennett is hitting .290 with seven home runs and K.C. hits cleanup for the Dogs and has a league-leading 29 walks to go with tremendous power.
