Amarillo Dillas News Release
The Amarillo Dillas entered their last regular season home game last night against the Laredo Broncos needing just 3,819 fans to attend to reach 150,000 for the year. Sunday was the last of the Corporate Buyout Games with Leal's Mexican Restaurant sponsoring the evening. With 7,081 faithful in attendance, the Dillas got the number they needed with 3,262 to spare.
"It was another beautiful night for baseball at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa", stated Dillas' General Manager Mark Lee. "This is by far the best home stand I have ever seen at this old beauty in the Dillas' history", added Lee. The Dillas played 5 out of the 6 final regular season games, with a rain out on Thursday, with record numbers of fans coming out to enjoy baseball. Attendance for the final 3 games of the home stand brought some 15,978 Dillas' fans out helping to set a new United League Attendance Record of 153,262 surpassing the old mark of 106,797 that was set in 2006 right here in Amarillo.
"It's becoming old hat for me to say this but without a shadow of doubt, we have the best baseball fans in America", said General Manager Mark Lee. "Despite our lackluster play on the field in the second half, our fans continued to show up in full force this year", said Lee. "I've been around this game a long time and it's an incredible feeling to see families coming to the ballpark, to see fans dancing in the stands to the YMCA and doing the Chicken Dance", added Lee. "You'd have to be here to see it for yourself", exclaimed Lee.
"I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all 153,262 fans that attended our games this year", said Lee. "The game is going to be played at 7:05 every night regardless of how many people are in the stands, but what makes baseball special in Amarillo are the fans that come out night after night".
The Dillas hit the road last night to finish out the season with an 11 game road trip that includes visits to Laredo, Edinburg, and Alexandria. The Dillas are currently 9 1/2 games out of first place so a trip to the playoffs is looking bleak but in the game of baseball stranger things have happened. With solid play and some help from other teams, the Dillas just might fight their way into the League Championship against the Rio Grande Valley White Wings capturing a Title that the fans in Amarillo so deserve.
The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club is a member of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is preparing for its second season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007.
