San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts (19-20) were mathematically eliminated from second-half championship contention on Sunday night, as they fell to the Edinburg Coyotes 7-5 at Foster Field. San Angelo's loss combined with a win on Sunday by the first-place Alexandria Aces has put the Colts 10.5 games back with only 10 games to play. San Angelo committed four errors and only posted four hits, as they concluded the season series against Edinburg with nine wins in 20 meetings.

With the Colts trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, Edinburg reliever Adam Clay walked two and hit a batter to load the bases with nobody out. Jason Diaz then hit a two-RBI single to pull the Colts within a run at 6-5 and knock Clay out of the game in favor of closer Julio Castro. Ronnie Gaines went to third base on the single by Diaz but he was stranded there after Castro struck out the first two batters he faced and induced Andres Rodriguez to fly out to end the inning and keep it 6-5.

An RBI single by Amado German in the top of the ninth gave the Coyotes a 7-5 edge and Castro threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth to record the two-inning save, his 19th save of the season.

The game started well for the Colts as they took a 3-0 lead in the first off Edinburg starter Carlos Jan (1-3). With the bases loaded and one out, Diaz scored on a wild pitch, just as Jason Crosland did later in the frame. Rodriguez also brought home a run with a groundout for his 48th RBI of the year.

Jan settled down after the first though, allowing just two baserunners over the next four innings as they lefty picked up his first win as a Coyote. Jan pitched five innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

San Angelo starter Matt Duff left the game after three innings with what appeared to be a right shoulder problem. The only hit he allowed was a two-run homer by Alexis Hernandez in the second inning that cut the Colts' lead to 3-2.

Ryan Mulle (5-4) entered the game in the fourth and took the loss as the Coyotes tied the score in the fifth and then took the lead for good in the sixth. Nick Aranda singled to lead off the fifth, stole second and advanced to third on the play because of a throwing error by catcher Josh Allan. Angelo Fermin, the next batter, singled home Aranda to tie the game at 3-3. The Coyotes opened the sixth with back-to-back singles, and Adam Bonner hit a sacrifice fly to put the Coyotes on top 4-3. Eric Gonzalez gave Edinburg some cushion with a two-run homer in the seventh to make it 6-3.

The Colts make their final trip of the season to Louisiana as they take on the first-place Alexandria Aces in a four-game series, starting at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 13. The Colts battle the Aces for seven straight games, as the two teams will also square off in the Colts' final home series from Friday, August 17 through Sunday, August 19.
