Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - Joey Cress (4-7) had one of his best starts of the season while Ryan Fox belted his single-season record-setting 22nd home run of the year to send the first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (46-43, 17-22) to a 4-2 victory over the Edinburg Coyotes (41-48, 16-23) tonight at Harlingen Field.

Fox's blast came in the eight inning as he led off against right-handed reliever Adam Clay. On an 0-2 pitch, Fox unloaded and sent the ball to the other side of the left-center field wall to make it 4-2 and give him the record.

The Coyotes got on the board against Cress in the first when Angelo Fermin singled and Eric Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice. It was almost a double play, but Miguel Peguero's relay throw went into the Coyotes dugout, allowing Gonzalez to take second and score on Amado German's single.

Alexis Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to drive in Fermin and make it 2-0.

Cress settled down after that, though, retiring the next ten men and not allowing another run as he went seven innings in his spot start, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks (one intentional) and four strikeouts

The WhiteWings sent their first run home against Bric Steed (7-8) with two outs in the sixth as Ryan Fox drew a four-pitch walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Brian Nichols single.

The WhiteWings took the lead in the seventh when Alejandro Martinez reached on an error and pinch-runner Ericnardo Padilla was sacrificed to second base. Kevin Griffin hit an RBI-double to tie the game and Bub Bergstrom hit an RBI-single to give the WhiteWings a 3-2 lead.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes continue the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Joe Rogers (10-3) is expected to face Aaron Guerra (9-3).
