Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - The Amarillo Dillas (41-36, 15-12) scored five in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to beat the first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (38-37, 9-16) 11-6 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings got things going right off the bat against Brantley Jordan (2-8), stringing together four two-out singles from Miguel Peguero, Ryan Fox, Luany Sanchez and Brian Nichols to make it 2-0.

Kenny Evoniuk (1-3) was lights out through the first three innings, striking out four while allowing one hit and facing the minimum nine batters thanks to a double play. In the fourth, though, Evoniuk ran out of gas as he walked Jonathan Reynoso on a borderline 3-2 pitch and then gave up a single to Justin Wenger and and an RBI-single to Carlos Figueroa. With Gary Schneidmiller batting, Evoniuk threw to first, but the ball got away, allowing Wenger to score and tie the game.

Schneidmiller followed with a single and Jack Chapman hit a grounder to second that Ericnardo Padilla bobbled. He recovered to throw Chapman out on what could've been an inning-ending double play. Jordan Ramos walked to load the bases and Brendan Hitchcock drew a walk to give the Dillas the lead and knock out Evoniuk after 82 pitches. Chris Gale came in and gave up a two-run single to Josh Ashton to cap the inning at 5-2 as 10 men came to the plate.

Things didn't get better in the fifth, as Wenger led off with a double and Figueroa singled. Danny Bravo hit an RBI ground out and Schneidmiller singled. One out later, Jordan Ramos extended his league-best 19-game hitting streak with a two-run double to make it 8-2.

Bryce Ahrendt came in from the bullpen in the sixth, but he couldn't stop the bleeding as Ashton led off with a single and Reynoso doubled him home. One batter later, Figueroa hit an RBI-single to make it 10-2.

Ahrendt was better in the seventh, striking out the side in a perfect frame.

Jordan was done after six innings, during which he allowed two runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The WhiteWings were happy to see Nick Burger in the seventh, as Omar Bramasco reached on an error and Miguel Peguero followed with his fifth home run of the season, a no-doubt shot over the right field wall to make it 10-4.

The Dillas got one back against Ahrendt in the eighth. After two strikeouts to open the frame, Wenger hit a first-pitch infield pop-up that dropped in front of the mound for a hit after Ahrendt collided with Alejandro Martinez. Figueroa walked and Bravo hit an RBI-single to make it 11-4.

The WhiteWings got their final runs in the ninth when Peguero led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and Fox walked. Luany Sanchez grounded into a double play on which Peguero scored. Nichols followed with a solo home run over the center field fence, his fifth of the season, to complete the scoring.

Burger ended up pitching the final three frames to pick up his fifth save.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this four game set tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Julian Williams (3-4) is expected to face Jorge Lugo (5-3).
