San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts (14-12) weren't able to overcome an early deficit on Monday night, as they lost to the Alexandria Aces (21-6) 4-2 in the opener of a four-game series.
The Aces put up three runs, two unearned, in the second inning against Colts starter Luke Massetti (6-4) to take a 3-0 lead. Luis Guance reached on an error to begin the inning, then Bryan Sabatella walked and Evan Cherry singled to load the bases with nobody out. Eddie Fitzpatrick, the next batter, doubled home two runs and Richard Paz brought home a run with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Colts chipped away at the lead though, scoring single runs in each the third and fourth innings off Alexandria left-hander Adam Cox (12-2), who won his 11th straight start.
In the third, Ronnie Gaines, who was 3-for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle, hit a solo home run, his 11th of the year, to make it 3-1. Madison Edwards doubled to lead off the fourth and scored on a single by Andres Rodriguez to make it a one-run game.
That was as close as the Colts came though, as Cox and the Alexandria defense prevented San Angelo from rallying. After allowing the leadoff man to reach in the fifth, Cox induced Jason Diaz to bounce into a 1-6-3 double play. The Colts also put the leadoff batter on base in the sixth but Cox retired the next three hitters on two fly outs sandwiched around a strikeout. Diaz was also thrown out trying to steal second to end the seventh inning and the Colts stranded a runner at third base in the eighth.
The Aces went ahead 4-2 when Selwyn Langaigne drove the first pitch of the eighth inning over the center-field wall for a solo shot, his fifth of the year.
Massetti took a tough loss as he threw eight innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Cox lasted 7 2/3 innings, giving up just two runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Aces closer Justin Dowdy pitched 1 1/3 innings, including the final out of the eighth, for his league-leading 17th save. The Colts had the tying run at the plate on two occasions in the ninth but Dowdy got pinch-hitter Josh Allan to ground into a game-ending double play.
The Colts continue this seven-game homestand with game two of this four-game series against Alexandria at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31; it will be a "Two-for-Tuesday" at Foster Field, as fans can enjoy two hot dogs for the price of one all night.
