May 30, 2019 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Lewin Diaz hit a game-winning home run in the top of the eighth inning, his record setting 10th of the month, to lift the Miracle to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Fire Frogs on Thursday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium. The win clinched a three-game sweep for Fort Myers.
All 10 of Diaz's homers this season have come this month, the most by a Miracle player in a single month in franchise history. Both Miguel Sano (April 2013) and Matthew LeCroy (August 1998) went deep nine times in a month. Diaz picked up three hits in the game to increase his league-leading batting average to .319.
The Miracle scored first with a couple runs in the fifth. Aaron Whitefield and Diaz each came through with two-out RBI singles.
Florida tied the game on Kevin Josephina's two-run double in the seventh, which chased Miracle starter Tyler Watson from the game.
Alex Phillips entered and picked up a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning. Phillips (1-2) remained on for the eighth and surrendered a leadoff triple to Shean Michel, but struck out the next three to preserve the lead. He then tossed a perfect ninth inning to secure his first win of the season.
Watson delivered his third quality start in a row. The left-hander went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out one. Whitefield and Jose Miranda had two hits apiece for the Miracle. Whitefield also swiped his 13th base, which leads the club.
The Miracle are now 5-3 on their 11-game road trip. They open a three-game series in Lakeland against the Flying Tigers on Friday night. Right-hander Jordan Balazovic will start for the Miracle. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. ET.
