Phoenix Mercury News Release

Phoenix - The WNBA announced today that Mercury guard and reigning WNBA MVP Diana Taurasi finished in the top 10 in final returns of the 2010 "WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun" Balloting presented by T-Mobile USA.

The selection guarantees Taurasi a spot in the exhibition contest on Saturday, July 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., which will showcase the world's best female basketball players under one roof as the WNBA's top talent faces the USA Basketball Women's National Team. The game will be aired on ESPN at 12:30 p.m. PT.

A four-time WNBA All-Star, Taurasi has participated in the WNBA All-Star weekend in every season of her career. Currently leading the league in scoring with 22.9 points per game, Taurasi finished fourth in the league with 93,649 votes. Seattle's Sue Bird (127,490), San Antonio's Becky Hammon (116,391) and Indiana's Tamika Catchings (100,248) topped the list.

The 10 players who received the most votes are guaranteed a position on the team rosters. On Thursday the league will announce the USA Basketball roster selected from within the National Pool. Any player voted in who is already in the USA National Team Pool will play on the USA Basketball team, led by head coach Geno Auriemma, while the remaining players who have been voted in by the fans will play on the WNBA team.

A vote by the league's head coaches will determine the remaining players on the WNBA squad, to be announced on Tuesday, July 6.

The Mercury returns home on Thursday to take on the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. Two days later on Saturday the club will face the New York Liberty at US Airways Center at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available starting at just $10 a game and can be purchased by calling 602-252-WNBA or visiting phoenixmercury.com.
