El Paso Diablos News Release

The El Paso Diablos rallied but came up short, 11-9 against the Sioux City Explorers on Thursday night from Cohen Stadium.

The Sioux City Explorers took advantage of some sloppy Diablos defense to plate three runners in the top of the second. Mike Cervera had the bases loaded after facing three Explorers to lead off the inning. Cervera walked home one run and two more scored on a throwing error from Evan Conley giving the Explorers a 3-0 lead.

The Diablos cut the deficit in the bottom of the second inning. Logan Wood hit a solo-home run to deep left field making it a 3-1 Explorers lead.

Sioux City had a tremendous top of the third inning against El Paso. The Explorers scored five runs off of four hits. Jake Daubert had a two-RBI double in the effort. Jake Tuttle had a two-RBI single as well.

El Paso scrapped away at the lead in the bottom of the third. Jorge Alvarez led off the frame with a double to deep left-center. Juan Camacho moved Alvarez over with a ground out and Logan Wood plated Alvarez with an RBI single setting the lead at 8-2.

The Diablos got right back into the game with a big bottom of the fourth. Kory Drew cranked a three-run homer to left field, his third of the season cutting the lead to 8-5.

Sioux City pieced together one run in the top of the fifth. Dustin Jones led things off with a walk off of Mike Cervera and moved around the horn on an error and a sac-bunt reaching third base. Jason Tuttle picked up his third-RBI with a sacrifice fly to mid center scoring Jones and giving Sioux City a 9-5 lead.

The Diablos used the long ball again in the bottom of the sixth. Juan Camacho hit his third home-run in three nights, a two-run shot to cut the lead to 9-7. Casey Clary later reached on an error and eventually scored on a Jordan Belcher single, which made it a 9-8 score going into the seventh.

El Paso tied things up in the bottom of the seventh. Kory Drew blasted his second home-run of the night, a solo shot into the left field night sky knotting up the contest at 9-9.

The Sioux City Explorers would not let the Diablos finish off the comeback. With one out in the top of the eighth, Jason Tuttle yanked a double down the left field line. Garvis Romero would induce Nick McCoola into a ground out for the second out. The Diablos then summoned Dustin Cameron to put out the fire. Cameron could not hold on as Julian Benavidez hit a two-run homer to left giving the Explorers the 11-9 advantage.

The Explorers bullpen was lights out the rest of the way. John Koch and Rory James pitched scoreless eighth and ninth frames to insure the victory for Sioux City.

Mike Cervera threw six full allowing six earned runs off of eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Garvis Romero picks up the loss (0-2) as he tossed one and two thirds innings of one-run baseball with one hit and one walk.

John Koch (2-1) picks up the victory as he threw two innings allowing one run off of one hit with no walks and one strikeout.

Rory James earned his fourth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The El Paso Diablos will open up a four game series against the Coastal Bend Aviators on Friday night. The Diablos will play Coastal Bend in a double header with the first game at 5:05 pm and the second one to follow immediately after. Josh Neitz and Dallas Strankman will throw for El Paso during the two games. The games will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
