
Saints Pitcher Villarreal Contract Purshased by Phillies

ST. PAUL, MN (June 14, 2007) - Say good-bye to St. Paul Saints starting pitcher Luis Villarreal. He was so impressive in his four starts with the Saints, the Philadelphia Phillies purchased his contract from the Saints.
The 27 year-old Villarreal was 3-0, 2.52 ERA in four games. In 25.0 innings he walked just six and struck out 28 while the opposition hit .240 against him.
"Luis has done a great job in his four starts here," said Saints Manager George Tsamis. "He definitely deserves the opportunity. He is the best pitcher I've seen in our league this year."
Villarreal, who pitched for the Saints in 2005, began the 2007 season with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He began the season at Double-A Huntsville where he was 1-1, 6.75 in eight games. In 10.2 innings he walked five and struck out 10 while the opposition hit .293 against him.
Villarreal was promoted to Triple-A Nashville and was solid going 0-0, 1.93 in six games. In 4.2 innings he walked one and struck out four while the opposition hit .313 against him.
Villarreal was a 20th round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2002 and played for Single-A Lowell of the New York-Penn League in â02 and Single-A Augusta of the South Atlantic League in 2003.
Saints pitcher Matt Harrington, who had been on the disabled list, announced his retirement.
The Saints roster now sits at 19 players, eight pitchers and 11 position players. The Saints can carry a maximum of 22 players.
