Diablos Comeback Falls Short

June 17, 2010 El Paso, TX - The Diablos made a valiant effort to come back but came up short as they fell to the Pensacola Pelicans 8-7 at Cohen Stadium on Thursday night. With the win Pensacola was able to take the series from El Paso and now have a 4-2 record over the Diablos this season.

The Daiblos would take a first inning lead on a J.D. Reininger sacrifice fly. The Pelicans came back with one run in the third inning to tie it and then took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Bryon Smith would narrow the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning when he hit his second home run of the season. The Pelicans would push their lead to 6-2 before the Diablos would start their comeback. El Paso would plate three runs in the eighth inning to bring the score to 6-5. Pensacola came back and added two insurances runs and they would end up needing both of them. El Paso would make their final come back push in the ninth inning when J.D. Reininger and Jeff Vincent both had RBI singles. They would get the tying run to third but were unable to find one more big hit.

The Diablos offense was led by Bryon Smith and J.D. Reininger. Smith went 2-4 with three RBI and a home run. Reininger went 2-4 with three RBI and a double. El Paso had ten hits on the night but were out hit by the Pelicans who struck for 16 for the second straight night.

Aaron Kalb got the start for El Paso and had to work in and out of trouble through his five innings of work. Kalb (0-2) would end up allowing three runs on nine hits and six walks. The Diablos walked eight on the night. They ended up walking 17 over the final two games of the series.

El Paso now welcomes in the defending champions the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday night. The Diablos will send Shaun Ellis (5-1, 4.06) to the mound. First pitch is slated for 7:05 and fireworks will follow the game. The game can be heard online at www.diablos.com.
