Mississippi RiverKings News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Peter Di Salvo made 26 saves and the Mississippi RiverKings (24-15-2) shut out the Huntsville Havoc (6-28-7), 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Von Braun Center. It was Di Salvo's first career shutout and the first for the RiverKings this season.
The RiverKings grabbed the lead early in the first period. Right off an offensive zone faceoff win by Paul Ciarelli, Ryan Marcuz passed the puck to Corey Leivermann, who fed it to Ciarelli in the slot. Ciarelli quickly fired a shot past Kevin Genoe for his fifth goal of the season. That was the only goal until the third, as Di Salvo stopped 22 of 22 shots in the first two periods to keep the RiverKings up 1-0 moving to the third.
Mississippi extended the lead halfway through the third period, on their second power-play chance of the game. Daniel Sobotka took a slap shot from the center point and Sean Jones finished off a scramble in front for his eight goal, and third power-play goal, of the season at 9:57. Late in the third Andrew Randazzo put the game away with an empty-net goal with 16 second left in the third.
Di Salvo faced just four shots in the third, but stopped them all for his first professional shutout. The win is the eighth straight win for the RiverKings, the second longest streak in the SPHL this season.
Notes: The RiverKings have scored power-play goals in four straight games for the first time this season. They have power-play goals in six of the last seven games... Corey Leivermann's assist in the first period was his first professional point in his second pro game.
The RiverKings are back home Tuesday, Feb. 24 against the Pensacola Ice Flyers for Miracle on Ice Night. Fans wearing red, white and blue to the game will get $2 off walkup ticket prices at the Box Office.
