PORTLAND, Maine - The Lowell Devils saw the Portland Pirates notch a three-goal first period and skate away with a 6-1 win on Sunday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Portland went up, 1-0, at 4:17 of the first after Derek Whitmore had his shot blocked, but Felix Schutz was left alone in front of a wide open net into which he deposited the carom.

Dylan Hunter made it a two-goal lead for the Pirates 1:15 later as he trailed in on a 3-on-2 and beat Scott Clemmensen with a shot from the left circle.

The score would go to 3-0 in favor of Portland when Colton Fretter intercepted a cross-ice pass in the Lowell zone and walked in for the breakaway goal at 11:13 of the opening frame.

During a 4-on-4 situation in the second period, the Pirates pushed their lead to 4-0 with some quick passing in front that culminated with Kenny MacAulay tapping in Mark Mancari's feed to far post.

The Devils looked to start up a rally early with a power play in the third. Nicklas Bergfors whacked at a loose puck in the Portland crease and was able to pound it past Kellen Briggs at 1:11 for his 11th goal of the season.

Aaron Slattengren needed only 37 seconds to help the Pirates regain their four-goal cushion, knocking in Tyler Bouck's centering pass. Mathieu Darche completed the scoring at 9:21 of same period.

Lowell and Portland combined for 136 penalty minutes in the contest.

The Lowell Devils continue on the road on Friday, March 6 versus the Norfolk Admirals at 7:15 p.m. Listen to the game live on ahllive.com. For more information about individual tickets and group packages, call (978) 458-PUCK (7825) or log on to www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
