Devils Rookie Smith Named Rbk Hockey Goalie Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Trenton rookie Jason Smith is the Rbk Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Mar. 10-16.

The 22 year old was 3-0-0 with back-to-back shutouts, a goals-against average of 0.33 and a save percentage of .989 to keep the Devils in the hunt for the fifth and final Kelly Cup Playoffs spot. He did not allow a goal for the final 16:17 of a 4-1 loss to Johnstown on Mar. 9 until 10:11 of the third period in a 4-1 win at Dayton on Mar. 15.

The 6-foot-3 and 202-pound Smith recorded his first professional shutout on Mar. 13 with 35 saves in a 6-0 win at North Division and league scoring leader Cincinnati. He turned aside 25 shots in a 2-0 win at Dayton on Mar. 14 and picked up his third win in as many days when he stopped 26 shots in a 4-1 win at Dayton on Mar. 15.

Selected in the sixth round (197th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft and under contract to the Lowell Devils in the American Hockey League, Smith is 10-15-3 with a 3.29 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage in 29 games for Trenton.

The St. Lambert, Quebec native played four seasons at Sacred Heart University where he was 38-29-4 with two shutouts, a 2.74 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 71 games.

Runners Up: Taylor Dakers, Phoenix (2-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .969 save pct.) and Davis Parley, South Carolina (3-0-0, 0.67 GAA, .978 save pct.).
